Playstation 3 Remote Control Review
April 12th, 2010 | Published in Video Game Reviews
The Playstation 2 was a hot item when it came out because it was the first game console to feature the ability to play DVDs. Unfortunately for those who purchased the Playstation 2 to be their full time game console and their full time DVD player, it did not come with a remote control. Instead, the DVD controls were tied directly to the Playstation 2 controller, making playback, rewinding, fast-forwarding, pausing, and skipping scenes awkward for anyone not familiar with the controller.
The Playstation 2 DVD remote is inferior to the Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Disc Remote in a few different ways. First of all, the remote for the PS2 had an infrared remote sensor on it, so you had to be pointing it directly at the television for it to function correctly. The PS3 Blu-Ray remote is connected to the machine via a Bluetooth connection, so you don’t even have to be in the same room for it to work correctly. Huzzah and hooray for technological innovation.
The old Playstation 2 DVD remote also neglected to include an eject or a power button. The PS3 version corrects the eject button issue, but many still complain that there is no traditional power button on the remote. Holding down the Playstation button in the center of the remote allows you to turn the machine off just like you can from the PS3 Six-Axis controller, but non-gamers may become frustrated with this. All in all, the remote offers the ability to not only appease your non-gaming friends and family when they want to watch a movie, but you can also use the remote to browse the internet, shop at the Playstation Network store, play certain games, and play music.
The battery life also doesn’t seem to be too bad, either, with a large number of customers stating that the lifespan is anywhere from 4 to 6 months.
So, to recap: great battery life, Bluetooth connection, and all the buttons you’d expect to find on a DVD remote… except the traditional power button. But, hey, for the convenience of having a magic wand to control DVD playback with instead of a controller most non-gaming family members would give up on trying to operate, what’s a lousy power button? The Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Disc Remote is definitely worth the money if you use your PS3 for a lot of movie watching.
